History of the Eliot Police Department

The Town of Eliot did not have an organized full time Police Department until 1964. Prior to that, the department relied on part time officers that operated independently without a chief of police.

There were no regularly scheduled shifts for patrol officers as each officer had separate full time employment and worked their patrol shifts during their off time.

The Maine State Police handled all motor vehicle accidents and other complaints which fell in the domain of a rural police department.

Officers were paid $1.25 an hour and .10 cents a mile, as they had to patrol in their own vehicles.

The cost of operating the Eliot Police Department in 1963 totaled $1376.60.

Today the Eliot Police Department consists of ten full time employees, to including six patrol officers, who are responsible for patrolling Eliot's 21.3 square miles and serving and protecting a population of close to 6, 500.

The department also has a part time animal control officer, a harbor master and a chaplain.

The department currently has a fleet of two Dodge Chargers and a Ford Crown Victoria which are rotated among the patrol officers for patrol shifts. We also have a 2005 Ford Ranger.

We also received a military HMMWV (HUMMVEE) from the US Army through a program which gives law enforcement agencies vehicles and other equipment at no cost to the agency. We hope to use the vehicle during sever inclement weather incidents and to reach areas of Eliot in which we were unable to reach in the past.
